A rare and complicated open-heart surgery called “Arterial Switch Operation” was performed successfully on a new born baby at Star Pinnacle Heart Centre, Visakhapatnam.
The child was diagnosed of a complex birth anomaly called TGA (Transposition of Great Arteries) commonly identified as a Blue Baby. This child was operated on day 6 of birth by the Cardiac team at Star Pinnacle Heart Centre including Dr. L Vijay Consultant Cardiac surgeon & Cardiac Anaesthesia team including Dr. PSS Srinivas, Dr. T Kiran babu and Dr. K Subba Rao.
The delicate surgery lasted for 6 hrs and the child was carefully monitored in the post-operative cardiothoracic ICU under the dedicated team of full pledged Intensivist and Nursing care. The child made steady recovery and was discharged on tenth day after the surgery.
TGA - this condition seen in 10 - 20 among 1,00,000 child births, is a life-threatening condition.
More than 90% new borns die within one month. The surgical correction also is a long delicate and complex procedure that needs an expert team effort to obtain successful results.
